The document above is a discussion paper and roundtable transcript intended to stimulate discussion and debate on defining cultural competency and developing common standards for evaluating cultural competency programs.

The “Working Paper: Interdisciplinary Cross-Cultural Communication Project,” was written by Lance Hill and used for the basis for a panel discussion in New Orleans by an outstanding interdisciplinary consulting team. The 17 page discussion paper and 125 page roundtable transcript are both contained in the pdf file on this site. It can be read on-line or downloaded. We encourage feedback on the blog site. We have included vitas and bios of the five members of the “Working Group” consultants who critiqued earlier drafts of the paper and offered their comments during the roundtable discussion.
The paper and transcript contain a wide range of useful insights into cultural competency work and the efforts to develop common standards and reliable evaluation tools. At the heart of the discussion are two questions: (1) what is cultural competency? and :(2) how can we effectively measure changes in knowledge, awareness, skills, and behavior resulting from cultural competency training programs?
